Importance of the subjects you have this semester :
1. Mathematics IV : This provides tools that will be used throughout your career as a communication engineer. How ? The Fourier transform is one of the most POWERFUL tool to analyse the contents of a signal.
What is a signal ?
That which carries information in it is called a signal. A sound bite, text, a photograph , a video clip all are signals. They can all be expressed mathematically.
Their contents can be analysed correctly by transforming the signal such that the contents can be seen.
A simple example will help you understand this. Let us call a ray of white light as the signal. How can we analyse the contents in it ? i.e. the frequencies (or wavelengths) that make the white light white ?
You all know the answer !
Pass it through a prism !! That's it. In this case the prism performs the task of transforming the white light into its constituent frequencies/wavelengths.
Now, extend this to a more abstract situation.
Imagine a signal is made up of many frequencies and it is difficult to identify which frequencies constitute this signal. A simple mathematical way of finding it is to apply the Fourier transform.
I will give another literally deadly (or funny) example to make it memorable (my own and my favorite !!).
Imagine you have two plates of biryani in front of you. Both look EXACTLY THE SAME.
Now, if you are told that both are yours and you can eat any one of them.Which one would you eat ?
How does it matter ? You may say. But here is the catch....
...one of these is laced with cyanide (you know what will happen if you lick it !!.
So now, which one would you choose ?
Tough job isn't it ?
Well yes. Inspite of one of them being poisonous, VISUALLY, both look alike (unless you taste it, which you will not).
So what to do now ? What if we had a TOOL that would transform the input intoa graph with items (in biryani) on the x-axis and the quantity of that item along the y-axis ?
Wonderful isn't it ?
We would then get : NO CYANIDE in one graph and CYANIDE in the other graph.
Of course, we would also get all other items like Biryani rice , green peas etc etc...which will be same in both.
The only difference between the two would be the presence or absence of cyanide.
But we don't have such a tool in the kitchen.
We do have it in signal processing.
Wait !! We started with Mathematics IV and are talking about signal processing !!
That will be the next subject : Signals and Stochastic Processing.
More about this tomorrow.
Hope you liked this information ?
This the problem with engineering. You start in one subject and end up in some other subject.

Instructions for tomorrow's viva for Section A
There will be a different examiner for you whose mode of conducting the exam will be different. Therefore, do not try to go by today's feedback.
1. Prepare for both the MINI and MAJOR projects.
2. Students of Section A must be present in the department with six copies of project reports (mini/major) before 09:00AM.
3. The teams will be called as follows :
- Teams containing students from Section A ONLY will be given first preference.
- GIRLs team will be given preference over BOYs team IF it is getting late.
- Teams containing students from both section A and section B must be present in full strength to provide comfort and confidence to their team mates from the other section and for any emergency.
5. Students are requested to create a professional atmosphere both in the exam room and in the surroundings that is the corridor.
6. I will be there tomorrow at 8:00 AM for signatures.
Best wishes
